Christopher James Jackson

Christopher Jackson was a very loved young man. He was born on April 1, 1985 in Boise, Ida., the son of Angela Dawn Shupe and Calvin Eugene Jackson. He resided in Caldwell, Ida., most of his life. Christopher just recently graduated at CWI with his High School Equivalency Diploma. He enjoyed spending all of his time with his family and friends. Christopher's memorial service will be held at 5 p.m., Saturday, June 11, 2011 at the Nampa Church of the Brethren. Christopher is survived by his mother Angela Shupe; father Calvin Jackson; sister Krystal Jackson, brother Miles Lowber; his many grandmothers, grandfathers, nieces, nephews, cousins and his girlfriend. We will always love and miss you forever and for always. You were truly one of a kind brother, son and friend.

Erva J. Verner

Erva J. Verner, 94, of Mesa passed away on May 10, 2011. She was born in Eau Claire, Wis. to Charles and Blanche Strand. She graduated from the Univ. of Wisconsin in 1939 with a BA in philosophy and journalism and from Arizona State Univ. in 1960 with an MA in education and again in 1971 with an Education Specialist degree. She was preceded in death in 1984 by her beloved husband Jack, whom she married in 1940. She is survived by sons Jim, David and Don, daughter Jackie Rundio, 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Erva spent many years as an educator. She taught elementary school in Scottsdale, Phoenix and at the Campus Laboratory School at ASU in Tempe. She was an assistant professor and lecturer at the ASU college of Education from 1966-1972. She served 10 years as Coordinator of Title I and Migrant I Education in Nampa, Idaho schools, where she retired in 1982. She was a bold, brilliant, beautiful woman and will be missed by her family and friends. Evelyn Mae Messuri

Evelyn Mae Messuri, 85, passed away on June 3, 2011, at her home in Boise surrounded by her large and loving family. Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 10, 2011, at Holy Apostles Church, 6300 N. Meridian Rd., Meridian. Evelyn was born Evelyn Mae Woodworth on Aug. 30, 1925, in Oregon City, Ore., the daughter of Edwin and Ethel Woodworth. From an early age, she was known to most as Honey Mae. Following his service in World War II, she married Anthony Messuri on Feb. 28, 1946, in Willamette, Ore. They came to Caldwell, Idaho in 1955, where they raised 10 children. Following her beloved Anthony's death in 2006, she moved to Spring Creek Assisted Living in Boise, Idaho. Evelyn loved her home at Spring Creek, where she was cared for by a wonderful staff and had many close friends. Although reluctant to leave her home of over 50 years behind, she flourished at Spring Creek. Evelyn was an accomplished painter, and painted many pictures for family, friends, and the staff at Spring Creek. She spent many hours at Spring Creek knitting with her good friend Wanda. Evelyn found her calling in life caring for emotionally and physically handicapped children as a foster parent. Evelyn and Tony were foster parents to more than 400 foster children. Most of these children had profound disabilities which required around the clock care. Evelyn loved these children as her own. Along with Tony, they were honored by the Catholic Extension Service with the Lumina Christi (Light of Christ) award for their more than 40 years of selfless service to these children. Evelyn and Tony were founding parents of the Mary-Lynn School in Caldwell, which became the model for the Special Education System in both Caldwell and in Idaho. In 1983, she was honored for her work by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Her citation read in part, "...She has personally done more for the region's handicapped population than any other person." Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her three older siblings, and her husband. She is survived by her children: Steven and Jo Messuri of California; Becky and Louie Berry of Oregon; Tom and Carole Messuri of Oregon; Mary Elizabeth Messuri of Nampa; Nancy Messuri-Robbins and Peter Robins of Eagle; Kathy and Dan Miller of Boise; Tony Messuri of Washington; Tim and Wendy Messuri of Boise; Molly Messuri of Kamiah; Ray Messuri of Caldwell; and many grand, great, and great-great grandchildren. Harold R. "Hal" Arnold

Harold R. "Hal" Arnold, 85, passed away on June 3, 2011, in Boise. Harold was born in Nampa, Idaho to Olen T. and Lulu Arnold on Aug. 15, 1925. He attended schools in Nampa, Idaho and Stockton, Calif. Harold enlisted in the U.S. Army serving in the Pacific theatre during World War II. Following his discharge from the Army he returned to finish his courtship of Ellen Evans in Boise. Harold and Ellen were married on August 2, 1947. Harold worked for many years at Salt Lake Hardware, then with Harris Brother's Lumber Company, Rostock Furniture and Appliance, Simplot, Amalgamated Sugar, and eventually moving in 1967 to Albion, ID where the family purchased and ran the AA Mart. While living in Albion Harold served on the Board of Trustees for Magic Valley Christian College. He had also served as a deacon while attending the Boise Church of Christ for many years. Harold's faith was very important to him. His gentleness, compassion and love for his savior Jesus Christ allowed him to serve, assist and care for many people. Harold was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Dorothy, a brother Glenn, and a sister Doris. He is survived by his wife of 63 years Ellen of Boise, Idaho, a brother Arnie (Willa) of Prescott, Ariz., his children Nancy (Jim) Fennell of Caldwell, Idaho, and family, Larry (Deborah) Arnold of Kansas City, Mo., and family, Roger (Connie) Arnold of Salem, Ore., and family, Ann (Paul) Reasch of Jerome, Idaho and family, foster daughter Sheila Rae Bragg of Portland, Ore. 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, and 21 foster kids. Harold and Ellen retired and moved to Caldwell, where he served the Caldwell Church of Christ as its janitor. Harold and Ellen then moved to Logan Park Congregate where they made many new friends. While at Logan Park Harold suffered a series of health issues that necessitated his moving full time to the Idaho State Veterans Home in Boise where the staff so graciously cared for "Hal". In January of 2011 Ellen moved to stay with Harold. The family is appreciative of the special care Harold and Ellen received. As a family we are blessed by the respect and dedication shown to our father and mother. You are truly angels and all we can say is "Thank You". A viewing will take place on June 9, 2011, at Dakan Funeral Home Caldwell, ID from 5-8 p.m. A celebration of life will take place on Friday June 10, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the Caldwell Church of Christ 4012 S. 10th in Caldwell, ID. A dinner will take place following the service for all attending. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to a favorite Christian College or to Camp Ivydale.

Lucy Honena Diaz, FORT HALL - Lucy Honena Diaz, 87, of Fort Hall, Idaho, passed away Monday, June 6, 2011, at her home., Lucy was born on September 7, 1923, in Fort Hall, Idaho, the eldest daughter of Laura Tendoy and Samuel Honena, descended through her great-grandfather, Chief Tendoy, and her grandfather, Toopompey of the Agai'dika or Lemhi band of the Shoshone tribe. Orphaned at the age of 9, she was raised by her grandmother, Nena Tendoy Tissidiment., Lucy lived in Gibson, Idaho, on the Fort Hall Reservation. She attended The Mission, an all-Indian girls' day school on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation and the Chemewa Indian Boarding School in Salem, Oregon., Lucy was a homemaker and mother, devoting her life to raising her family., On April 1, 1943, Lucy married Joe Vincent Diaz. She has been married for 68 years to Joe, who is a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. They have eight children (three deceased), 13 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren., Lucy is survived by her husband, Joe V. Diaz; son, John Diaz; daughters, Bev (JJ) Wadsworth, Debbie (Willy) LaMere, Barbara J. Edmo and Norma (Mark) Wadsworth; brother, Snookins (Nora) Honena; 12 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Lucy is preceded in death by her parents, sons, Greg and Vern, daughter, Linda, brothers, Hooper Honena, Lee Hardy, Brazil and Woodrow, infant sisters, Agnes and Bernice, and one grandchild., Lucy will be taken to her residence on Diaz Lane and Highway 91 at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 8, 2011. Matthew Jon Arnold

Matthew Jon Arnold, of Middleton, Idaho died Sunday, June 5, 2011, at Saint Alphonsus from a devastating car accident with his friend JP Branen. Matthew was born on April 6, 1993, in Burbank, Calif. to Jon and Patty Arnold. Matt had many nicknames, one in particular was Mataao a name used by his mother. Matthew was about to graduate from Middleton High School a week after the accident took place and there he was one of Middleton's star football players. Matt's main hobby was spending time with family and friends; he lived to be with loved ones. Matt was planning to join the Navy in order to serve for his country, where he was also planning to join their football team. Matt is survived by his parents Jon and Patty Arnold; his sisters Amanda and Alysa Arnold; many aunts, uncles, and cousins; and an endless number of friends. Matt's funeral will take place at the original Middleton High School in the gym at 2 p.m. on Friday June 10, 2011. If attending please dress casual; that is how Matt would have wanted it.

Ray Robinson

Elven 'Ray' Robinson, POCATELLO- Elven "Ray" Robinson passed away at the Idaho State Veteran's Home on June 5, 2011, at the age of 86., Ray was born to Henry Lawrence and Fern (Peck) Robinson on December 5, 1924, and grew up in Rockland, Idaho. He was brother to 11 siblings, Wilda, Bernice, Henry "Lawrence," Ruth, Clifton, Myrl, Gordon, Max, Elden "Jay" (his twin brother), Dwayne "Curtis" and Hazel "Beth.", He met his wife and "sweetheart," Veda, and they were married on March 18, 1944, prior to him serving in the U.S., during, in Italy., After the war, he and Veda were sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple. They settled down in American Falls, Idaho, where they were blessed with five children, Clifton and Clinton, followed by Gordon, Julie, and Laurie., Ray worked in Ford's Garage as a mechanic and later worked in maintenance at Westvaco, which became FMC. He was a, boxing coach, and his three sons all participated in boxing. For many years, he was involved in Scouting, along with his wife, Veda. He also loved hunting, fishing, horseback riding, and spending time with his family., Ray and Veda moved to Inkom, Idaho in 1972, where they enjoyed living in the country. They adopted their little girl, Melody, who was later sealed to them in the Idaho Falls Temple., Ray served an 18-month mission with Veda, in the Tulsa, Oklahoma Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and enjoyed teaching the gospel and serving others., Ray rejoined his Heavenly Father and beloved family members including his wife, Veda, daughter, Melody, and his grandson, Clay Robinson. He is survived by his children, Clifton (Nola) Robinson, Inkom, Clinton (Galene) Robinson, Weston, Gordon (Dona) Robinson, Inkom, Julie (Marvin) Siler, Inkom, and Laurie (Charlie) Atkinson, Lewiston, Utah., Ray was the last living child of Henry Lawrence Robinson and Fern Peck Robinson. He was also preceded in death by his parents and his 11 brothers and sisters., He will be greatly missed by his family including his 31 grandchildren and 69 great-grandchildren, who will always have fond memories of "Grandpa" and the way he teased and made them smile., Thanks to the Idaho Veterans Home and Hospice Alliance for the excellent care he received, and to all of the friends and neighbors that took the time to visit him., Viewing for Ray will be held on Friday, June 10 at Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 South Fourth Avenue from 6 to 8 p.m. Ray's funeral will be held on Saturday, June 11 at 11 a.m., with a viewing from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the new LDS Church located at 150 Snowpeak Avenue, Inkom, Idaho., Funeral arrangements are under the care of Colonial Funeral Home. Robert E. Obray, CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Robert E. Obray, age 51, passed away at his home in Cathedral City, Calif. He graduated in 1978 at Highland High School. 


 


 

Ronald A. Rodes

Ronald A. Rodes, 86, lived (and we mean, truly lived) a life full of faith, adventure, and joy. He was forever grateful for the love of God demonstrated in Jesus Christ which dramatically changed his life at the age of 21. Ron was born in Clovis, N.M. on June 23, 1924, to Grace and Arno Rodes. After high school he joined the Navy in 1942 and served as a radioman on the original crew of the USS Orion in the South Pacific. Following his honorable discharge at the end of WWII, he returned to Clovis and, during this time, came to know Christ. Hungry to deepen his Christian walk, he attended Pasadena College, Pasadena, Calif., for one year and then returned and married Alberta Gunstream of Clovis on June 8, 1947. After completing a second year at Pasadena College, Ron and Alberta moved to Albuquerque where he learned the building trade. The couple then returned to Clovis. After a short stint working in his father's clothing store, he became a farmer. In his early 30s, he responded to God's call on his life and soon afterward entered the pastoral ministry. He pastored churches in New Mexico, Colorado, California, Washington and Idaho. He directed Christian summer youth camps at Bonita Park, N.M. for over a decade and continued to invest his life and resources in the camp throughout his life. Full of adventure, including the adventure of faith, he had a heart of love for people in any circumstance of life. In recent years, he poured his life and love upon the men and women at Celebrate Recovery, the people at Lighthouse Rescue Mission and anyone who was in need of encouragement. Following a stroke on Memorial Day, May 30, Ron passed away on Wednesday, June 1, 2011. He is survived by his wife, Alberta; by three sons, David (Lynette) Rodes, Randy (Reeni) Rodes and Stan (Cindy) Rodes; by 8 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, 6 step-grandchildren and 7 step-great-grandchildren new to our family, by numerous nieces and nephews, and by his sister, Phyllis (Eddie) Pridgen. He was preceded in death by his sister, Lucille Mitchell, and his daughter-in-law, Mae Rodes. Samuel Merrill

Samuel W. Merrill, PRESTON - Samuel W. Merrill, 92, passed away day June 7, 2011, at the Heritage Home Assisted Living Center in Preston, Idaho, of causes incident to age. He was born Oct. 5, 1918, the eighth child of nine children and the second son, born to Mary Laura Hansen and Olonzo David Merrill at Richmond, Utah., He met and then married Virginia Callan, a beautiful Dayton, Idaho girl in the Logan LDS Temple on June 12, 1947., Sam's father was a farmer in Richmond and some of Sam's earliest memories were being in the fields, threshing grain and herding and milking cows. He attended high school in Richmond, where he was active in football, drama, and had interests in art. He received the Citizenship Award during his senior year., In 1937 he enrolled at Utah State University and received a football scholarship. In 1941, he was chosen "All Conference Tackle." Sam graduated from USU in 1942 with a BS degree in education and had a love for art., In 1942 and 1943, Sam was engaged in flight training under the Civilian Pilot and War Training Programs. In 1943 and 1944, he was an instructor, training cadets in a pilot training program. He was discharged from the Army Air Corps in 1945. Sam began a long career in aviation at the Preston Airport and was, manager for several years. In 1948, he became a partner in a flying business, training pilots and after 1954, the bulk of the business was in aerial application of pesticides. In 1956, he was hired as an aeronautics instructor at USU and after earning his master's degree in 1965, he became an associate professor of aeronautics. He was also an aircraft inspector for the Federal Aviation Agency for many years., In 1972, Sam wrote and published a book, "Fluid Power for Aircraft," which was adopted by several schools throughout the United States and some other countries for use in their curriculums. He received the Rocky Mountain Safety Award in 1973 as a result of this effort. Sam also compiled a manual of FAA inspection regulations and other aviation guides related to maintenance. He printed these at his own company, Rocky Mountain Publishing. These books were distributed and used by aviation inspectors and maintenance specialists across the U.S., Sam has been active in giving service in the LDS Church and community affairs. Many winter nights in the 1950s and '60s he would stay up for several hours and prepare ice skating ponds for the City of Preston. He was also an active member of the Franklin County Search and Rescue for several years., Sam always enjoyed "do-it-yourself projects" and had a love for building the family cabin at Palisades, Idaho, since the early 1960s. He also loved fishing, hunting and spending the summers at the cabin with family members whom he loved very much., After retirement from a 30-year career at USU, he enjoyed spending winter months at a home he purchased in St. George where he renewed his art skills. He completed many lovely paintings., Sam has been an inspiration to his family, friends, associates and colleagues with a life dedicated to hard work, service, and generosity., He is survived by his wife, Virginia, of Preston; a son, Robert S. (Wendy) Merrill, of Preston; a daughter, Marcia Merrill, of Pocatello; one grandson, Christopher R. Merrill, Lewiston; and a sister, Julia Berryessa, California. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant grandson, Richard Callan Merrill, and sisters, Georgia Merrill Allen, Olive Merrill Fillmore, Linda Merrill Peterson Gould, Sarah Merrill Hobbs, Harriet, Merrill Spendlove, Alice Merrill McBride, a brother, Stanley Merrill and half-brothers, David and Casper Merrill., A one-hour open visitation will be held on June 9 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Webb Funeral Home, 1005 South 800 East in Preston. Graveside services will be conducted at approximately noon at the Dayton, Idaho Cemetery with Bishop Lynn Eskelson presiding and conducting. Interment will also be in the Dayton Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Webb Mortuary in Preston. Whitney Johnson

Whitney Johnson, GROVELAND - Whitney Owen Johnson, 91, of Groveland, passed away June 6, 2011, at Bingham Memorial Hospital of old age., He was born November 6, 1919, in the farming community of Groveland. His parents, Michael Johnson Jr., and Elsie Mae Paskett Johnson purchased an 80-acre dairy farm, in Groveland, where he would live and work for half his life. They also raised apples on the dairy farm. The Johnsons raised potatoes, beets, hay and snakes on a second farm at the end of Bond Road near the lavas., Whitney's education included eight grades at Groveland, graduating from Blackfoot High School in 1937, a year of college in Logan and photography school in Salt Lake City., As a young man, his passions were dancing and horses. As a middle-aged man his loves were Western novels and horses. As he aged, he loved making Americana crafts on a table saw and wood lathe. Whitney lived life with a sense of humor., During, retinitus pigmentosa kept him from enlisting in the military. His service to the war effort was growing food for the troops and the country. For a few months he worked in a factory in Inglewood, California, building B-52 bombers., On May 12, 1944, he married Donna Jane Lott, "the prettiest girl in Groveland," in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They had three daughters., At the age of 59, the Idaho Commission for the Blind offered him the Atomic Energy Commission Snack Bar located in Idaho Falls. For 20 years Whitney provided sandwiches, beverages, snacks, and kind words to the government workers. As an activist for the visually impaired, he spent many years serving in regional and local offices for the National Federation of the Blind., Whitney is a high priest in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In his youth, he served a stake mission. He served for decades as a home teacher., He considers his family to be his greatest accomplishment and blessing. He is survived by his wife, Donna of Groveland; daughters, Kaye (Bob) Aubrey of Groveland, Sharlene (Hugh) Sandow of Thomas, and Ruth Ann Johnson of Blackfoot; grandchildren, Rob (Lauri) Aubrey, Garren (Debra) Aubrey, Shelley Aubrey, B.J. (Shantel) Stinger, Markell Fresh, and Jennifer (Donny) Flores; 14 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren, and his sister, Anna (Joseph) Baldree of Groveland., He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Steve Aubrey, brothers, Homer P. Johnson, Louis E. Johnson, Stuart P. Johnson, and David E. Johnson, and sisters, Marjorie Holman and Elinor Stuart., Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 10, 2011, at the Groveland LDS Second Ward (155 North 380 West, Blackfoot), with Bishop Brent Higginson officiating. The family will visit with friends on Friday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in Groveland Cemetery., Condolences may be sent to the family online at
