Pauline Bradshaw

Pauline (Pauli) Bradshaw 1920 - 2011 Pauline (Pauli) Bradshaw passed away May 25, 2011 at St. Luke's Magic Valley Regional Medical Center of complications related to pneumonia. Born in 1920, Pauli was raised on a farm in Attica, Indiana by her parents Archie and Alma Carlson and with her beloved sister Maxine (Mackie) Carlson Treece. She graduated from Attica High School in 1938 and went on to graduate from Lake View Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse in 1941. Throughout her life her work as a nurse was one of her greatest prides and joys. After receiving her RN, she worked at Cook County Hospital in Chicago in pediatrics. After the outbreak of World War II, she enlisted and joined the Women's Army Air Corps where she rose to the rank of Second Lieutenant. Stationed in Las Vegas, she cared for wounded soldiers who were being sent back from the South Pacific and received her orders to report to that theater of the war just days before Armistice was declared. After receiving her discharge, she returned to work at Cook County Hospital in Chicago and met Clyde (Deg) Degler whom she married in 1947. Soon after their daughter, Teri, was born, Deg convinced her to move to the West. An avid outdoorsman, he was entranced by the opportunities to hunt, fish, and explore the wilderness in Idaho. They arrived in Gooding in the winter of 1948. Pauli often reminisced about the infamous winter of '48, the massive piles of snow and, when summer finally came, how bleak the desert looked to a girl from the green hills of Indiana. But Pauli soon adjusted and came to love Idaho where she spent some of her most enjoyable hours fishing and hunting wild mushrooms and asparagus. During her nursing career in Idaho she worked at Gooding Memorial Hospital, Shadel's Treatment Center in Wendell, and the Magic Valley Manor. At the Manor, she became superintendant of nurses and, later, Hospital Administrator. Pauli was one of the first women in the Northwest to become a registered Hospital Administrator. She is remembered by fellow nurses, patients, and hospital employees as an exceptionally dedicated and compassionate nurse and a caring employer. She worked at the Manor until 1983 when she married Kenneth Bradshaw. The happiest years of Pauli's life were spent with Ken, who passed away in February of this year. She was extremely proud of Ken's being a member of the Idaho State Senate where he served three terms from 1977-1982. Ken and Pauli were also very active members of the Episcopal Church in Gooding. During their retirement years, they traveled extensively taking trips to Europe, Hong Kong, the Panama Canal, Alaska, and the Amazon. Pauli is preceded in death by Ken, her parents, her stepson Charles Degler, his wife Bonnie (Peterson) Degler, her stepdaughter Sharon (Degler) Knight, her husband Ted Knight, and their son Rick Knight as well as her sister Mackie - who was not only her beloved sister but also her closest friend. She is survived by her daughter, Teri Degler, her husband Kaz Kobielski, and their daughter Kasia Carlson Kobielski; her nephews David and Kip Treece; her stepdaughter Betty Jo (Degler) Fairbanks, her husband Rick, their son Jeff, and their granddaughter Lindsey; Sharon Knight's children Randy Knight, Marci Knight (and Helgi Gudmundsen), Broc (and Mike) Perea, and Charles' children Mark, Kevin, Chris, and Andrea Degler. She is also survived by her stepson Gary Bradshaw, his wife Carol, and their children Carrie (and John) Arkoosh, Monica (and Mark) Eriksen, Rex (and Cyndi) Bradshaw, as well as Carrie, Monica, and Rex's children: Jake, Joe, and Ben Arkoosh, Hallie, and Ethan, Brody Eriksen, and Riley Bradshaw. Pauli was locally renowned for her gregarious personality, her love of fashion, and fabulous sense of style. She will be greatly missed by her extended family and her many friends - especially her fellow church members and her bridge playing partners. In lieu of flowers the family suggest, memorials to the Shriner's Hospital for Children at Fairfax and Virginia St. Salt Lake City, Utah 84103 or a charity of the donor's choice. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm, on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at the United Methodist Church, 805 Main St. Gooding, Idaho 83330 with Reverend Richard Goetsch and Pastor Steve Tollefson officiating.
