Darrell Roy Higgins

Darrell Roy Higgins 1958 ~ 2011 Darrell Roy Higgins, 53, of Boise, Idaho, said goodbye on 15 April 2011, surrounded by loved ones. His long and courageous journey ended at St. Alphonsus Hospital in Boise, Idaho, only days after a final, joyful fishing trip with dear friends. Born in Abilene, Texas on 7 January 1958, Darrell was the second son of Heston and Edwina Higgins. A military family, the Higgins moved from Texas to Louisiana, finally settling in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where they remained for the majority of Darrell's childhood. Darrell was an outgoing young man, active in scouting, baseball, tennis, and school activities. An outstanding student, he graduated with honors from Harrison High School and the University of Colorado, receiving his B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1980. Darrell began his career in Colorado but eventually joined the FONAR Corporation in New York. He spent the 1980's traveling the globe, installing some of the first MRI equipment ever developed. In New York, Darrell met and married Evelyn, with whom he shared the joy of raising three beloved children—Rob, Ruthie, and Erin. Although his health challenges ultimately ended Darrell's career, his devotion to his children was unwavering. Throughout every twist and turn in life's road, his first and final thoughts were of his children. Settling in Boise to be near his brothers' families, Darrell maintained a keen sense of humor and an avid curiosity. He was always learning and experimenting: studying robotics, baking, reading, painting, and learning to play the banjo. When possible, he traveled to see family and friends. In addition to a good pot of red beans and rice, Darrell loved nothing more than the World Series, a well-crafted mystery, and a great day of fishing. A true son of Texas, he was a life-long and loyal Cowboys fan. Darrell was a devoted son to Heston and Edwina Higgins, who preceded him in death. He will be cherished as the loving father of his three children, Rob Higgins of Boise, Idaho and Erin and Ruth Higgins of Maine. He was a true friend and brother to Dennis and Tanya, Brian and Dolly, and Linda Higgins. His sharp wit, common sense, and kind heart will be missed by his loving nieces and nephews—Jared, Adam, Katie, Lily, Patrick, Addie, and Alexandra—as well as his faithful friends, Ron and Janan Morris. All who knew him and called him friend will remember his courage, dignity, and humanity. Family and friends will gather to share memories of Darrell on Monday, April 24th at 4 pm at Summers Funeral Home in Boise, Idaho. Darrell reached out to his community by supporting the Idaho Food Bank. If you would like to honor his memory, please consider doing the same.

David Erich Oberbillig

David Erich Oberbillig 1948 - 2011 David Erich Oberbillig, 62 of Canungra Queensland Australia died of cancer on February 10th, 2011 at the Gold Coast Hospital in Southport Queensland. He was born July 25, 1948 to Donald and Lesley Oberbillig in Boise, Idaho. His parents operated a two-way radio service for guest ranches, pilots, and mining operations, so he grew up roaming the foothills above Table Rock. As a young man David enjoyed working at the family mines near Yellow Pine and also at the Shepp Ranch on the North Fork of the Salmon River. He loved the outdoors. As an adult he had many adventures living in California, Seattle, and Idaho. In 1988, he migrated to Australia and worked at various mines doing survey work. Most recently, he was enjoying his retirement living in Canungra Queensland at a beautiful place out in the country. He loved sitting on his veranda enjoying a "fine wine" and calling the many family members and friends he kept in contact with. My dad is described by all as a caring, easy going man with a heart of gold who loved to pass along a good joke. His phone calls will be missed by us all, and as he would say, "see ya "round the ridges"! He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Lesley Oberbillig, and brother John "Jack" Oberbillig. He is survived by his daughter, son in law, and granddaughter, Allesha, Michael, and Mia Green of Boise, step daughter Laura Alexandra Herrera of Oaxtepec Mexico and family, brothers Donald Dale (Cate) Oberbillig, Robert Leslie (Judi) Oberbillig, and sister Charlotte Hess all of Oregon.

Phyllis Hand

Phyllis Lucile Carpenter Hand October 25, 1931 - April 18, 2011 Phyllis Hand, 79, passed away April 18 in Boise due to complications from a recent stroke. Phyllis was the middle child born to John "Jack" Clarence Carpenter of Houlton, Maine and Lucile Magnuson Carpenter of Ely, Nevada. Along with her brothers John and Jake, she grew up during the Great Depression and WWII. Ely, the Magnuson Ranch and her extended family were the center of her physical universe, and their memories endured throughout her lifetime. She graduated with honors from White Pine County High School in Ely and the University of Nevada in Reno, where she was a business administration major. Early in her senior year, Phyllis met a recent Korean War veteran, David Hand, on a blind date. By Thanksgiving, she took David to "The Ranch" and they were married on June 28, 1953. After David completed his master's degree in geology, they lived in Kimberly, Nevada, Maple, Ontario, and Montpelier, Idaho. When David became legally blind in 1964, Phyllis and David bought a family business in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Their six children grew up at the Falls View Motel, and many of her best friendships were formed during the Idaho Falls years. Phyllis and David moved to Boise in 1975; except from 1979-81, they have been Boise residents. As a small business owner and the spouse of a visually-impaired veteran, Phyllis was, by nature and by necessity, an incredibly independent person. Trained in business, she and David were a true team through good times and dark times. No person was more selfless than Phyllis. As a wife, she was always where David needed her to be. As a parent, she gently empowered her children and set examples by her actions more than her words. As a grandparent, she was present and available. As a friend, she was committed and caring. As a citizen, she was involved in her community. As a Roman Catholic, she was quietly devout and service-oriented. Phyllis would give the shirt off of her back and, in truth, she did. Even when life's circumstances left them with little to give, Phyllis and David gave more. The best and most recent example is their service at the Corpus Christi House, a homeless day shelter, where they have volunteered every Tuesday for many years. Their lesson to us all is that, when you have nothing material to give, you can still give your time and talents. Phyllis carried that spirit to her family's life as well. She lived for her children, grandchildren and an extended family network. Each of us has many special memories that demonstrate her love and dedication—sitting at a basketball game, making a unique blanket, celebrating birthdays. She was a giving caretaker, a skill that she needed more than she would have wished. Phyllis is survived by her husband, David Hand of Boise, and their children and partners: Kathi Hand of Seattle, David Hand and Dianna Santos of Boise, Karen (Hand) and Russell Comstock of Boise, John and Loraine Akins Hand of Boise, Marty Hand and Chrissy Roehrman of San Jose, and Kris (Hand) and Shane McNevin of Spokane. Her grandchildren are Emma McNevin, Gabriella Hand, Leaha Hand, Andrew Hand, Thomas McNevin, Morgan Hand, Alyssa Santos, Jared Hand, Ryan Hand, Kate McNevin, Rorie Hand, Myles Sansotta, Tony Johnson, and Christine Sansotta. Myles and his wife, Erin Hibbard Sansotta, brought their new daughter Molli to Boise in the months before Phyllis' death. Survivors also include her brothers John (Roseann) Carpenter of Elko, NV, and Jake (Norma) Carpenter of Bakersfield, CA, and her sister-in-law Merilyn Rinchen Hand of Paia, Hawaii along with many nieces and nephews. Her nephew and niece, John T. Carpenter and Vitina Reminger of Boise, cousin Paul Carpenter of Elko and cousin Mike Carpenter of Houlton, Maine were especially close to Phyllis. Her former son and daughters-in-law are William Johnson, Kelly Reich, Amy Walker, and Jennifer O'Reilly. She was preceded in death by her dear cousin, Mary Catherine Clarke of Louisville, Kentucky, whose funeral coincided with the hour of Phyllis' death. The long list of meaningful friendships she had is too long to print?but you know who you are and we thank you. Her dearest friends include Mary Kay Pendrey, Sister Mary Louise Deroin, Hermie Belliet, and Gerry Wielang. The family appreciates Phyllis' co-workers at the International Sweet Shoppe, Silver Creek Computers and Walmart (Overland) in Boise for their friendship over the years. Thanks also to the staffs at St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center and Elks Rehabilitation Hospital. A wake to celebrate her life will be held on Easter Sunday from 3:30-6:30p.m. at Sacred Heart Church. Mass of Christian Burial and reception will be held on Monday, April 25 at 11a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. Burial at Idaho State Veterans Cemetery to follow. Arrangements are under the direction of the Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Phyllis' memory to the Corpus Christi House at 525 American Boulevard, Boise ID 83702 or http://corpuschristi.wordpress.com/donate/.

Roderick Alan Johnson

Roderick "Rocky" Alan Johnson Dec. 16, 1953 - April 17, 2011 On Sunday, April 17, 2011, Rocky passed peacefully at St Luke's Medical Center in Ketchum surrounded by his family and friends. His valiant year- long battle with his leukemia is finally over. Rocky was born in Baker OR on Dec 16, 1953. He was always a 'busy little boy' with an endless curiosity and a mischievous personality, but his winning smiles and sweetness usually kept him out of trouble. Rocky graduated from Weiser High School in 1972 to pursue a variety of occupations. He worked in construction, auto repair, a tire shop and spent many years in the Food & Beverage industry. His last career choice - and his dream - was to become an electrician. He was working towards his journeyman license with Poggi Electric when he became ill. He lived in Weiser and Boise ID until moving to the Wood River Valley in 1978. There he found his 'home' and the love of his life, Debbie Oneida, in that beautiful valley. He was a volunteer fireman for several years but his true passion was softball. The love of that sport kept him playing the game and coaching women's softball and his beloved Balltrappers for over 25 years. Rocky never met a stranger and had an uncanny memory for those who touched his life in even the smallest way. Always thinking of others first, his kind ways and generosity were his trademarks. He treasured his family and friends and nurtured those relationships to the end. Rocky will be lovingly remembered and truly missed by us all. Survivors include: Debbie Oneida of Bellevue ID, his devoted partner; his mother, Marilyn Goodman of Nampa; his daughter Priscilla Ramirez, granddaughter Celeste Ramirez and grandson Santana Ramirez all of Weiser ID; sisters Jackie Korte and Shannon DeHaas of Nampa ID, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great- nephews. There will be no services at this time. Because of Rocky's 'love of the game', a memorial softball game will be held in May in Ketchum; a time to come together for sharing memories of his life's journey. Arrangements are under the care of Wood River Chapel, friends are invited to leave condolences and share memories at www.woodriverchapel.com, for several years but his true passion was softball.
