Archie England

Archie England April 1, 1916 - April 29, 2011 "Take a deep seat and a long rein!" This is the credo that lead Archie England through life. Born on April 1, 1916, he returned to the home ranch on April 29, 2011. Born in Salmon, Idaho, he spent his first 13 years on Bohannon Creek with his parents James and Mary and his brothers Roy and George and sister Doris (Yearian). He saddled up at 13 and rode off to be a cowboy! He spent 13 years buckarooing on the Mahaffey Ranch in Salmon. While cowboying was his life, his sports were rodeoing and chasing wild horses. He married Isabelle Berriadge on June 14, 1941 and spent 56 years in that partnership which ended with Isabelle's death in 1997. They moved to Pocatello in 1944 where he worked for two years for Union Pacific Railroad--the only job he ever truly disliked. In 1946, they began farming in the Blackfoot area and remained there until 1955. Sons James and Odell and Daughter Mary were born during that time. From 1955 - 1961, they dairied and farmed in Tyhee. In 1961 the family moved to Emmett. Following the move to Emmett, Archie spent one year Plaza Ranch dairy, 9 years at David Little Farms and 13 years with the City of Emmett as Sexton. After retirement from the City of Emmett in 1981, he developed his avocation of (re)building sheepwagons and made 13 which are scattered around Idaho. His retirement "job" was preparing and placing headstones (some unknown hundreds) at which he was a master craftsman; he did the sheepwagons and headstones until 2007. In 2003 he married Mary Felicia Waters with whom he enjoyed his last years, especially their trip to Australia. His wife Belle, brothers Roy and George and stepson Berry Hill preceeded him in death. His survivors include his second wife Felicia, his sons James (Hazel) and Odell and daughter Mary (Marshall Pinkston), grandchildren Willa, Erin, Thomas, Joanna, and Evan, great grandchildren Andrea, Gregory and Jace, and great great grandchild Emily and extended family, Rozanne Robertson and Daniel Ronfeld. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday May 4th at the Potter Funeral Chapel in Emmett. Burial will follow at the Emmett Cemetery. Following the graveside everyone is invited to a reception at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Emmett. In lieu of flowers Archie would appreciate donations to the Gem County Fair Board for the purchase of an electric rodeo scoreboard for other hard of hearing old cowboys.

Clyde Carpenter

Clyde Calvin Carpenter Aug. 31, 1927 - April 29, 2011 Clyde Calvin Carpenter, 83, of Boise, ID, (formerly of Oklahoma City) died April 29, 2011, from complications following surgery in Boise, ID. Clyde was born on Aug. 31, 1927 to William Leonidas Carpenter and Jennie Viola (Sutton) Carpenter in Healdton, OK. He graduated from Capitol Hill High School in Oklahoma City in 1945 and immediately joined the Navy during the war. He was a veteran of World War II, having served on the USS Pressley, and was honorably discharged in 1946. Clyde married Lenora Faye Mikes in 1950 and had two children, Nancy C. (Haragan), and Richard D. Carpenter. Clyde and Lenora divorced in 1975. Clyde joined the Postal Service as a mail carrier in 1951 and retired in the 1980s with his final service based in the Murrah Building in Oklahoma City. He was cited many times for outstanding service including one citation for having weathered a tornado that hit his personal residence in 1959 and showing up for work and delivering mail after much of the area had been destroyed or damaged, including the Postal Service office where he worked. Clyde and his brother, Richard (who has bowled two perfect games), were active bowlers in South Oklahoma City, primarily at Penn 44 and Holiday Lanes. Clyde was an active bicycler who enjoyed morning rides and coffee with friends at Draper Lake and in later years along trails on the Oklahoma River. Clyde married Martha Mae Townsend on Oct. 3, 1978 and they lived happily together for more than 20 years until she passed away December 31, 1999. When health problems and personal safety issues from living alone became a challenge, Clyde moved to Boise, ID in 2009 to live with his son, Rick. Balance issues kept him from being able to ride his bikes so he transitioned to a three-wheel recumbent bike that he rode through the streets and alleys of his neighborhood near 32nd and Gavin in the last year. He dearly missed his riding buddies in Oklahoma City, particularly Don Wisel who worked at the postal service with him and became a regular bike rider with him after they retired. Clyde had a passion for mechanics and automobiles, Studebakers in particular. In the mid '60s, a south Oklahoma City neighborhood high school student, Ray Gentry, took a liking to Clyde's total rebuild of a Studebaker Champion. He was so fascinated with every aspect of rebuilding the car from top to bottom, that Ray helped him every night with every part of the rebuild project down to the final paint job that they did together. When the car was complete and Ray turned 16, Clyde signed the title over to Ray. That unselfish character and his appreciation for pursuing a person's passion illustrate the kind of person his family remembers. Clyde was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Martha; a brother, W.L. Carpenter Jr; two sisters, Wanda Ruth Starr and Alma Rae Schwenk, and a granddaughter, Jenny Rebecca Hendricks. Clyde is survived by his sister, Alta Mae Cagle; brother, Richard Asbury Carpenter of Oklahoma City; daughter, Nancy Haragan (Mike Haragan) of Huntsville, AL; son, Rick Carpenter of Boise, ID; grandsons, David Michael Haragan of Fort Collins, CO, and Bryan Scott Haragan of Huntsville, AL; and numerous friends and family including Martha's daughter, Carolyn Robb, and other family members. Viewing will be 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 3, at the funeral home in OK with Graveside services following at 3 p.m. at Resthaven Memory Gardens. Friends may leave condolences at www.vondelsmithmortuary.com. Directed by Vondel Smith/South OKC, OK.

Two more daughters, Valerie and Cynthia, were born there. Once they were in grade school, Macy went back to teaching. She also completed a bachelor's degree in education at Idaho State University. She taught at Tendoy, Washington, and Chubbuck elementary schools. A lover of classical music, Macy made sure her daughters had piano lessons, and she sang soprano in the First Presbyterian Church choir and the Camerata Singers for many years., When Douglas retired, he and Macy moved to Boise, where Macy was a substitute teacher. She and Doug spent many enjoyable days camping in the Idaho wilderness, particularly in the Owyhees. Macy grew delicious tomatoes and green beans in the back yard. She loved art of all kinds. For several years she taught English to new immigrants, mostly Vietnamese, with whom she forged affectionate bonds., When Douglas died in 2004, Macy moved to Oregon to live with her daughters Cynthia and Valerie, who cared for her at home until her death., Donations in Macy's memory can be made to: Willamette Valley Hospice, and Oregon Natural Desert Association

Marvel Lurell Greenley

Marvel Lurell Greenley Dec. 21, 1925 - May 1, 2011 Marvel Lurell Greenley died on Sunday, May 1 at 7:30 am in her home in Boise Idaho. A memorial service will be held for her at the Cathedral of the Rockies Methodist Church, 747 N. 11th St, Boise, Friday, May 6, 2011 at 11:00am, under the direction of the Summers Funeral Home. Marvel was born on December 21, 1925 to Hans S. and Muriel I. Berg in Ventura, California. She attended Elementary, High School, and graduated from Ventura Junior College in 1946. During WWII, in addition to attending college, she worked at the Mira Loma Air Force Academy. She enrolled at San Jose State College in 1946 and graduated in 1948 with a B.A. in Education. During her second year at San Jose State she met her future husband Joe Greenley. A year later on February 23, 1947, they were married beginning a union which produced 5 wonderful children and lasted for 64 years. Marvels teaching career commenced immediately after she and Joe moved to Wren, Oregon in the summer of 1958 where Joe attended Oregon State College. Joe had a summer job with the Oregon Forestry Department as a Fire Warden, and Marvel taught six grades at the one room Wren Elementary School. The Forestry Guard Station provided them a home for the next two years ($25/mo. in the off fire season) and a school house 100 yards from their front door for her first job and thus contributing significantly to our financial support. Marvel and Joe moved to Smith Valley, Nevada after his graduation in 1950 for his job with the Nevada Fish and Game Department. She was pregnant at the time so teaching had to wait; however, teaching was now in her blood, particularly with small children, so she would invite local preschool children over to her yard for some free early learning, weather permitting. Marvel moved again in 1958 to Reno where Joe had a new job with N.F.&G.D. By this time they had five children, all born in Yerington Nevada. When all of these children were in school, she sought and was hired by Agnes Risley Elementary School of Sparks, Nevada and taught there from 1964-69. Again she became a significant contributor in supporting the family. In 1968 the family moved to Juneau, Alaska with four of the kids on a leave of absence from Nevada for a year. Again she sought and received a substitute teaching position. In 1971, Marvel, Joe and their two boys moved to Boise, Idaho for Joe's new job as Director of the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. She concluded her teaching career at Lowell Elementary School in 1980. Her final moves were back to Reno, then to Wilsonville, Oregon and finally back to Boise. Marvel was a member of the First United Methodist Church serving on the Administrative Board in the past, and a member of Priscilla Circle. She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi (Honor Society in Education), Honored Queen of Jobs Daughters Bethel #79, Ventura, California; a member of Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Smith Valley, Nevada, the Roger Williams Family Association of Rhode Island and was active with the Campfire Girls and Bluebirds youth organizations. A certificate of Recognition was presented to Marvel by Governor John V. Evans for serving the people of Idaho (as an Elementary school teacher) with distinction, loyalty and ability, and from Governor Cecil D. Andrus in recognition and appreciation of her outstanding volunteer service to the Idaho State Library Blind and Physically Handicapped Library Services Volunteer Recording Program. Marvel is survived by all of her five children: Johanna Crouch (Norman), Loretta Ponton (Bill), Rebecca Kissel (Kevin), Joe H Greenley (Bonnie) and Jeff Greenley (Judy), eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren and her beloved cat "Pootu". Some of the most pleasant times Marvel enjoyed were camping trips in the summer with all the kids and dog to Kennedy Lake in the Sierras as well as the National parks and especially Bruneau State Park which became an annual event. She enjoyed several cruises, and also a trip to England, Scotland and Norway, the origin of some of her ancestors. The Greenley family is very grateful to the staff of the Visiting Angels of Treasure Valley for her daily care and companionship, Valley View Life Care facility for their care and therapy, the staff of Legacy Home Health and Hospice for their expert care, comfort and equipment and subsequently, Summers Funeral Home to help us conclude a task so heart wrenching. We are extremely blessed to have these people available to us in this valley during these most trying times for any family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Idaho Humane Society, 4775 Dorman St, Boise or a charity of your choice., in Smith Valley, Nevada, the Roger Williams Family Association of Rhode Island and was active with the Campfire Girls and Bluebirds youth organizations.
