Elizabeth King

Elizabeth "Peggy" King 1914-2011 Elizabeth "Peggy" King, age 96, a long-time resident of Bruneau, died peacefully in a Boise hospital on May 12, 2011. Services will be held at the Bruneau American Legion Hall, Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at 11:00 A.M. A viewing will start at 10:00 A.M. She was born June 23, 1914 at home in Bowmont, Idaho to Robert Blakeslee and Edyth (Kern) Blakeslee. The birth announcement in the local paper reported she was the first white child born in Bowmont. She had an older brother, Kern and a younger brother, Bill. Mom grew up in Bowmont, graduating from Nampa High School in 1932 and the University of Idaho (Southern Branch at Pocatello) in May 1934. Her first job was teaching at the one-room school in Little Valley, 1935 - 1937. She was paid $85.00 a month for teaching with an extra $5.00 for cleaning, chopping wood for the fire, etc. She married Fred King on May 23, 1938. Except for a one-year teaching job following WWII, mom and dad lived on the family farm in Little Valley, but in 1952 the backwaters of the C. J. Strike Dam covered part of the farm resulting in a buy-out by the Idaho Power Company. With their farm gone and a growing family, they made a courageous decision to file on 640 acres of desert land under the Homestead Act in what is now known as Sugar Valley. With one tractor and a team of horses they cleared the brush, leveled the land, built the fences, drilled the wells, dug the irrigation ditches and moved a house in from Boise. Those first years were difficult but they somehow managed to make a living and raise their six kids?Carolyn, Joe, Bob, Mary, Connie and Judy. In 1963 at the age of 49, mom went back to college (summer school at Idaho State University) to renew her teaching certificate. Five years later and with many summer school classes and projects behind her, she graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Education and was once again a full time certified teacher in the Bruneau school system. Mom continued to teach in the Bruneau Elementary School until dad died in 1977 and then she retired to work in her yard and garden, which were a source of enjoyment and gave her a purpose for getting up in the morning. She always valued work and felt uneasy if she didn't do something meaningful each day, even after she turned 90. One of her favorite sayings was 'my brow is wet with honest sweat' a line from The Village Blacksmith. She was preceded in death by her husband Fred and two of their children; Carolyn Bowman and Bob King; one grandson Walter Bowman and brothers Kern and Bill Blakeslee. She is survived by four of her six children; Joe and his wife Jodie of Eagle; Mary Tindall and her husband Gene of Bruneau; Connie Mauck and her husband Jack of Briggsdale, Colorado; and Judy Eichelberger and her husband Barry of Hayden Lake; 15 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 18 great-great grandchildren and a life-long friend and sister-in-law Bernice Blakeslee of Nampa. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be sent to the Bruneau Library, PO Box 278, Bruneau, ID, or the Bruneau Quick Response Unit, PO Box 294, Bruneau, ID 83604 or an organization of your choice.

Irene Alber, AMERICAN FALLS - Irene Alber, 68, of American Falls, passed away Tuesday, May 3, 2011, at Power County Hospital in American Falls surrounded by her family, friends, and loving husband of 43 years Richard "Sonny" Alber. She entered peacefully into eternal rest as she joined our Heavenly Father in Paradise, and for that we rejoice., Merle Irene Harris was born on April 6, 1943, in American Falls, Idaho, the oldest of four daughters of Ernest Robert and Grace (Brown) Harris., Irene was raised in Aberdeen in the house her father built, which was a source of great pride for the family. She attended Elementary School in Grandview, and graduated from Aberdeen High School in 1961. Shortly after graduation, Irene moved to California where she met and married Jim Ridle. They were blessed with a son, Troy James, in 1963. Irene and Troy returned to Aberdeen in 1966., Irene soon met the love of her life and soul mate Sonny Alber in Aberdeen and they began their 43-year journey together on August 4, 1967. Sonny took Troy under his wing as if he were his own son as he and Irene started their family together. In October of 1968 their daughter, Shawna Jo, was born and less than a year later in October of 1969, they welcomed their third child, Mindy Lee. Over the years Irene worked at various jobs including Lamb Weston, Simplot, INL, Washington Construction, and Velvet among others. The family moved to American Falls in 1977 to open Sonny's Service Center where Irene took care of the bookkeeping and many other duties for their business until Sonny retired in 1986. Irene continued to work until 1996., Irene and Sonny loved camping, campfires, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, traveling, and just being outdoors. Sonny's racing career took the family all over the country, and Irene captured it all in photographs. She kept scrapbooks and records of every race and every detail of their travels. Irene and Sonny were always together and logged many miles traveling from coast to coast of the U.S., Canada, and even made a monthlong trip down the California Baja through Mexico., Irene was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 3. She loved her kitties, gardening, cooking, crafts, crocheting, collecting her favorite things, music (especially Johnny Cash and Elvis), and spending time with family and friends of which she was blessed with so many. The door to their home was always open and there was always room for one more at the table, one more to spend the night. One of the things she loved most in the world was spending time with her grandchildren. Although she only had eight of her own, she was "Grandma Irene" to so many more., Irene is survived by her husband, Sonny; children, Troy, Shawna (Justin) Kuttler, Mindy (Trini) Ramirez; grandchildren, Jordan, Jamie, Teauna, Hailie, Telina, Krystal, Alyssa, and Shauntae; sisters Shirley Labes, and Rita (Steve) Kelso; brother in laws Gene Alber, and Bryce Chapman; sister in law Donna Mae (Bill) Price; five nieces, nine nephews and great nieces and nephews; along with many friends. Leonard DaybrestLeonard B. Daybrest GREAT FALLS Mont. — F

Leonard B. Daybrest, GREAT FALLS Mont. - Formerly of Pocatello, Idaho, Leonard B. Daybrest passed away due to natural causes at Benefis Hospital in Great Falls, Montana, on April 27, 2011. He leaves behind two nieces, one nephew and several great-nieces and great-nephews., Leonard was born in Glenrock, Virginia, on May 31st, 1927, second son after William, to Jalmer and Elizabeth (Hendricksen) Daybrest. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Lava Hot Springs, Idaho, where a third son, Elmer, was born. Leonard attended school in Lava Hot Springs and joined the U.S., in 1945. He attained the rank of corporal and served as a sharpshooter and cannoneer. His military awards include the, Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal., After receiving an Honorable Discharge from the Army in 1947, Leonard returned home and worked at the Hill Sawmill Co. and Kraft Cheese. In 1963 he earned an Industrial Electronics degree from Weltech College in Salt Lake City and opened a business repairing televisions and radios. He later worked for several outfitters as a guide and packer, and for the Teton Nation Forest as a trail maintenance foreman, retiring in 1989. This allowed him to devote his time to his first love, gunsmithing., Leonard had a natural gift of being able to understand and build or repair any commercial firearm he touched. He did anything from small repairs on handguns, shotguns and rifles to building custom rifles and reworking standard rifles to make them shoot extremely accurate and perform impeccably. The highest classification of gunsmithing is Master Gunsmith and for those of us who had Leonard work on our firearms, Leonard is way past Master and well into "Artist." The remarkable part of Leonard's gunsmithing abilities is that he had no instruction, informal or formal, in the craft of gunsmithing. Leonard was self-taught. He even learned how to use the tools of the trade the same way, he taught himself. His favorite types of firearms were the large-caliber rifles commonly used for big and mean animals in case of an "Up Close and Personal" encounter. When he wasn't working on guns, he loved to hunt, fish and camp in the mountains.
